The Handball Spezial was originally designed as a handball shoe in adidas' home country of Germany for the indoor sports game which is very demanding on the shoe and needs to be sturdy enough to cope with short, sharp movements and the high friction created by the players. It was first worn in 1979 and quickly became a favorite among German, Dutch and Scandinavian players. However, it wasn't until the 1980s and the onset of the casual movement in football that these shoes became a fashion staple as well. Travel fans appreciated their comfort and sporty aesthetic, quickly realizing that they looked good with jeans and other items popular in the 1980s men's wardrobe. The Handball Spezial features a premium suede outer upper with generous cushioning on the feet. It also has a thick rubber outsole and a reinforced heel panel to withstand the wear and tear they are subjected to. It has a simple look which is no doubt part of the reason why it has achieved such a timeless look. Fashion moves in cycles and currently the Spezial offers a unique retro appeal reminiscent of the late 70s and early 80s. Extremely lightweight, the Handball Spezial will surprise you with its ability to maintain this attribute alongside such a durable exterior. The outsole features a four-zone construction for the required durability and, originally in 1982, the Handball Spezial was produced in red and white, black and white or white and blue. They are now available on our shelves in the most iconic colorway: Black/White/Gum.
